You Cook With It Too: Why Kitchen Water Deserves More Attention

Most people think about filtered water when they fill a glass.

But the kitchen uses water all day long.

You rinse your lettuce in it. Wash tomatoes under it. Boil pasta in it. Cook rice with it. Add it to soups and sauces. Fill the kettle. Make coffee. Freeze it into ice.

And unlike pasta water that gets drained away, plenty of that water actually becomes part of the food you eat.

So perhaps the better question isn't simply

“Do I filter my drinking water?”

It’s:

“What water am I actually using in my kitchen?”

Start With Something as Simple as Washing Vegetables

Think about how often fresh produce goes straight from the tap to the plate.

Tomatoes. Lettuce. Herbs. Peppers. Strawberries. Apples.

This isn't about suggesting filtered water somehow sterilizes your vegetables. It doesn't.

It's simply about consistency.

If you already prefer filtered water because you want to reduce chlorine, unwanted tastes, odors, or other concerns in your incoming supply, it makes sense to have that same water available when you're preparing the food you eat.

You probably wouldn't deliberately rinse a salad in water you wouldn't enjoy drinking.

Now Think About Rice

Rice makes the point even better.

You don't pour the cooking water away.

The rice absorbs it.

The same goes for soups, stews, sauces, and plenty of other meals where water becomes an actual ingredient.

Coffee is mostly water.

Tea is mostly water.

Ice is literally frozen water.

Once you start looking around the kitchen, the distinction between “drinking water” and “cooking water” becomes pretty thin.

This Is Where an Under-Sink Filter Makes Sense

One of the easiest ways to introduce filtered water into everyday kitchen life is to treat it right where it is being used.

The H₂OGuard® Two Stage Undersink Water Filter sits out of sight beneath the sink and uses a carbon-block pre-filter followed by a second treatment cartridge selected according to the household's water concerns. AquaHub currently offers Microban carbon block, GAC/KDF, ceramic, and ultrafiltration configurations.

It can either feed a dedicated stainless-steel drinking-water faucet or connect directly to the existing kitchen faucet, depending on the installation chosen.

That distinction is actually quite useful.

If you're only interested in filtered water for drinking and cooking, a separate faucet keeps things simple.

If you'd rather have filtered water coming through your normal kitchen faucet for things like rinsing vegetables and food preparation, an inline configuration may make more sense.

Different Water Problems Need Different Filters

This is where water filtration becomes more useful than simply buying whatever system has the most stages.

The H₂OGuard U2000 range, for example, allows the second filtration stage to be selected according to the treatment required.

The GAC/KDF configuration is intended for sediment pre-treatment along with chlorine, chloramine, and chemical reduction. The ceramic and ultrafiltration configurations provide alternative levels of treatment for different concerns.

There isn't one cartridge that automatically makes sense for every home.

The water should determine the technology.

Not the other way around.

And Then There’s Reverse Osmosis

For households looking for a higher level of drinking-water purification, H₂OGuard also offers 4-stage under-sink reverse osmosis systems.

H2O currently carries both a traditional drop-in cartridge version and a system using easy-to-replace twist-off cartridges.

Reverse osmosis uses a membrane as part of the treatment process, making it a different proposition from standard carbon-based filtration.

For some homes, that's exactly what is required.

For others, a quality carbon, GAC/KDF, or ultrafiltration system may already address the actual concern.

Again:

Start with the water. Then choose the filter.

The Best Kitchen Filter Is the One You Stop Thinking About

This is probably the nicest part.

Good kitchen filtration shouldn't become another chore.

The system sits under the sink.

You turn on the faucet.

Wash the spinach.

Fill the pot.

Make the coffee.

Top up the water bottle.

Carry on with dinner.

There doesn't need to be a lecture about water every time you cook.

It simply becomes part of the kitchen.

Water Is an Ingredient

We put plenty of thought into the food we bring home.

Good vegetables.

Fresh herbs.

Better coffee.

Good quality rice.

Proper ingredients.

Water deserves to be part of that conversation too.

Because sometimes you're not just drinking it.

You're cooking with it.

Find the Right Kitchen Filtration System

H₂O International offers kitchen filtration ranging from compact under-sink systems to multi-stage filtration and reverse osmosis, allowing the system to be matched to the home's actual water concerns.
